THE METHOD
One survived the cut. Here is how the cut is made.
What we weigh
For each category we look at the same set of qualities.
- Quality. How well it is made, and how well it holds up to being used.
- Design. Whether form and function belong together.
- Performance. How well it does the job it exists to do.
- Durability. How long it lasts in real use, not on a spec sheet.
- Usability. How it feels to live with every day.
- Value. What you get for what you pay. Not the same as cheap.
- Reputation. What owners and specialists consistently say over years.
- Availability. Whether you can actually buy it, now and next year.
- Long-term ownership. Support, warranty, spare parts, resale.
- Repairability. Where relevant, whether it can be fixed rather than replaced.
Weights change
A car and a pen are not judged alike. Performance matters more in one, repairability in the other. Each category lists what it weighed most. We show the emphasis, not a score, because a number would imply a precision we do not have.
What we claim
GREATEST is an editorial selection. It is our judgement, made from specifications, long-term reputation, and the record of how a product ages. We do not claim universal objectivity. We do not claim a product is scientifically proven to be the best. Another team could choose differently, and that is fine.
What we check
Facts on these pages come from manufacturers and public references, and are cited in our records. Where a fact is uncertain, we leave it out and flag it for review rather than guess. We do not copy retailer reviews, and we do not display prices unless they come from an approved, current source.
How selections change
Every selection carries a date and a last-reviewed date. A winner can be replaced. When it is, the old one moves into The Vault.
